Sec 3 Resilency Program

Today, the Sec 3s begin their Resiliency Program.
We began the program with an exciting program introducing the Dynamic Combat Method for Personal Protection. We are the first school to introduce Reality Based Martial Arts training as part of a Resiliency training module for students

Our boys were first made to go through some conditioning exercises to push their physical limits:

We can see all the 'fit-fit' VS boys really pushing themselves all the way!

After learning the basic ready stance and the fundamentals of 'shielding', our boys began to challenge each other in games to test their ability to maintain and protect their centre-line- Anyone who got touched by his opponent on the back or rear shoulder was 'out'

Our 3B sports class made good us of team-work and tag-team combinations to dominate this game:

The boys definitely enjoyed themselves and we hope that they will realise that being strong and tough isn't a merely physical attribute but a mental and emotional one as well. So pay attention during the resiliency training boys, you always learn something.

VS Student Leaders' Investiture 2008

Thu 21st Feb was Victoria School's 3rd Student Leaders Investiture. We were pleased and honoured to have Mr Soh Wai Wah (Senior Asst Commisioner for Police), former Victorian and Chief of Staff of Singapore Police Force, who graced the occasion.

SAC Soh gave us a unique insight into leadership as service to others. He spoke of the leader as a servant; not a master.
To illustrate this point, SAC Soh shared with us some incidents from his personal life to illustrate servant leadership and how it is the desire to serve that exemplifies a true leader:

Principal Mr Loh also shared with us how leaders should exhibit moral courage. In his address, he highlight an incident where one of our Victorians corrected the misbehaviour of another VS student in public and apologised to the member of the public on his friends behalf:

The true test of leadership doesn't lie in the claims that you make or the visions you state that you will achieve but in you willingness to do what is right.

That is the challenge we face each and every day of our lives- to do the right things and to do them right.

GCE PE Weight Training for Fitness (Week 7)

As our boys continue their coursework preparations for Weight Training, we have begun to incorporate more sophisticated forms of performance feedback for them.
Today, they make us of the Swinger video motion capture and analysis software.

The Swinger software was originally designed to help golfers with their swing but it has grown to have multi-disciplinary uses across all sporting domains.
In this software, a video camera is hooked up to a laptop via firewire (1394)cable.
Video is then captured 'live' and stored either in the laptops hard-disk or RAM. Users are subsequently able to compare the capture footage via image overlay, image sync, etc.

Here we see the boys use the Deja-Vu feature where the boys are able to set the software to capture footage for a specified period and play it back after a short delay. This allows the performer to complete his action in front of the camera and then move over to the laptop to see an 'instant replay' of the previous 30secs of the clip.

Back to School after CNY

After 4 days of non-stop festive eating, we came back to school ready to plunge ahead. After all, CA is just next week and I'm sure all our boys are ready to go and looking eagerly towards their first series of test :) (yeah, rite)

But truly the day began with a really upbeat start with the performers from Rhythm Masala who gave a rousing percussion and drumming performance for the Lower Sec.

The Upper Sec boys went back to class for their Character Education session. A follow-up from last week, today's CE's task was for the boys to solve the problem of getting a 'radioactive' waste container out of the radioactive zone without stepping into it or dropping the container.

Sec 3B guys definitely showed some creative sparks and insight with the way they utilised their ties to generate 'equal and opposing' forces to stabilise and move the radioactive container.

VS Chinese New Year Celebrations 2008

We're off for 4 days of holiday for the Chinese New Year,
Victorians in the hostel celebrated the New Year with a steam-boat dinner on Mon 5th Feb.

The VS Wushu Team performed during the dinner and here we can see the following boys in action:
Tan Xiang Ting: Free-style Chang Quan
Fung Jin Jie: Competition Cudgel
Wayne Kang, Sean Ho and Tan Xiang Tian: 3-Man Sparring

For our own celebrations at VS, the Wushu Team performed Lion dancing, you can catch pictures of the event here (courtesy of Mr Su Ronghua)

We were also honoured by the presence of Madam Ge Chunyan, a founding member of the Beijing Wushu Team that toured internationally with Jet Li. She is the parent of one of our Sec 1 boys- Liu Haoran. Madam Ge gave us a great demonstration of Bagua Double-Deer Hooks

(Liu Haoran, your mother is cool, sia!)

Victorians were also treated to a special performance by Auntie Meizhen. We've all seen how our hard-working team of cleaning and operation staff work tirelessly to upkeep the school and it's a familiar sight to see Auntie Meizhen hauling water hoses, cleaning the pond. Just for us today, we see a completely different side of her!

Victorians, we are indeed blessed to have everyone from the teachers to the EAS staff working together to make the school a place we can call home.

GCE PE- Weight Training for Fitness (Week 6)

The boys are well into their 6th week of training.

In today's clip, we see Mr Tan demonstrating the proper method of doing a squat:

Later, the boys were broken up into groups of 3- two spotters and one lifter.
They take turns to spot and correct each other through both variations of the squat- the front and the back.

Sec 3B Character Education

Our innovative and creative blokes from Sec 3B had our scheduled Character Education session today.

The task was to build a strucure using ice-cream sticks and blu-tack. Each member of the team was had a try each and the structure would be built one stick at a time by each member.

Some of the ideas were quite ingenious:

Some were just plain weird:

Shows that Victorian's truly think outside the box!
This is what the Transformers movie would have looked liked if Victorians had been the one making it. In the words of Fadhil, "Buget lah, sir"
Yeah, right...
So much for budget airlines!

Thanks to Mdm Tang and Mdm Lyana for this great lesson package!

The event was an enjoyable with great food, lots of games and loads of enthusiasm from staff and parents.

In this clip, we see how teams had to peel oranges together in one of the games organised by the PSG. Check out Hui Bian's deadly combination with David!
