GCE PE: Preparing for Term 2 Coursework

In Term 2, Sec 4B boys will be doing their Course work for CCA sports.

So this PE lesson, we are getting the boys to start taking ownership of their assessment process and to organise themselves into teams to go through the assessment process for filming.

Here we see the boys taking volleyball going through the organisation for the drill segment of assessment (we will do gameplay at a later stage)

Boys, here are some questions I would like you all to answer.
Please post under comments with your name:
1) How could you organise this segment to facilitate assessment?

2) What are some of the improvements you can suggest to specific players?

In this clip, we see the Soccer boys doing their passing in pairs.

Same thing here- please asnwer the following questions and post under comments:
1) How can you organise this segment to facilitate assessment?

2) What are some key points to focus on for passer and receiver

Safety in Sports

Our Serious PE Class, Sec 4B did their CA presentation on Sports Safety

First up, we have Dilip's group which gave us this image of a nasty looking tackle

17/02/2009 - Share on Ovi
After that, all of us dare not play soccer with Dilip liao

Then we have Daniel Lightfoot's group giving us some weird suggestions to do with the Javelin.

I'm not sure what kind of sound you supposed to hear when you shake the javelin. hmmm... Dunno what you all thinking sometimes

Then we have Naren's group tell us about issues with take-off and landing in Long Jump and importance of good foot wear:

Ernest group showed us 2 very vivid clips on what were some accidents that could happen during Pole Vault

Chong Chieh's ability to rattle off dimensions makes him an excellent candidate to be a furniture salesman

Then we 'kena' presentation by Hidayat group on Hockey:

From now on, all keepers need to learn how to use their heads to save the ball but make sure wear helmet otherwise, sure kena.

Desmond and the volleyballers then presented a nifty slideshow using the Ibook, on safety during volleyball

I'm sure the boys were very engrossed in your pictures of female beach volleyball players *ahem* For the love of the game, right?

Good job boys, will give you your makes on Mon with the report.

GCE PE CourseWork (Soccer/Hockey- Week 8)

This is Week 8 of GCE Coursework for Soccer and Hockey.

From the technical aspects of play, we are now developing the tactical aspects of play with the boys. From practicing set plays, now we see Mr Sng explaing the various principles of offensive and defensive play in action:

The Hockey boys were not to be outdone today.
Today, we saw Miss Sheikha giving them the finer points of how to take a penalty corner.
Of course, before all this practice can happen, we need to get geared up.
Here's Dilip, looking absolutely like a Sesame Street character :)

So on to the Penalty Corner! Usually it's the attackers who intimidate the defenders during the penalty corner. Here, it seems it's the other way around!

From the above clip, I suggest Khairul to take up Golf to represent Singapore in YOG.

We had the sides switch over. Must commend Dilip for his fearless ability to stop the ball using all parts of his body-- Only problem for him is once he falls down, he cannot stand up again on his own.

Here we see Mr Sng giving the boys some shooting practice.
Check out the fantastic curl in by Haaziq.

We saw some fantastic goal keeping as well-- JJ's ability to stop a ball with his face was awe-inspiring. Now the whole class want to take up wushu and learn to develop iron-hard muscles in the face.

Rock-never-die, JJ

GCE PE Coursework (Soccer/Hockey- Week 3)

For Soccer, the boys are progressively moving up to more technical skills.
Today, they are concentrating on the various ways to dribble past an opponent.

As the boys get more competent, an obstacle is placed to simulate a passive defender.
Here the boys use a green cone to take the place of an imaginary defender.

We don't see the boys taking Hockey today because most of the boys taking the Hockey module this semester are from the soccer team (and vice versa)
And today for the first time since 1973, the B-Boys have made it to the finals!

Tune in for more updates later on the match when we go to Jalan Besar Stadium

GCE PE CourseWork (Soccer/Hockey- Week 2)

In our Week 2 of CourseWork for GCE PE, the Hockey boys have had the priviledge of having Mr Suketu Khabaria from the Singapore Hockey Federation come down to give them a session on Hockey Rules and Umpiring

Mr Khabaria is an International Umpire for Hockey and gave our boys valuable insights into the game.

He was able to give them a detailed explanation of the various rules and regulations for players and referees. This will help them in their coursework to develop a better understanding of the game.

For the soccer boys, they were already on moving on to more advanced passing skills in their lessons.

GCE PE Weight Training for Fitness (Week 7)

As our boys continue their coursework preparations for Weight Training, we have begun to incorporate more sophisticated forms of performance feedback for them.
Today, they make us of the Swinger video motion capture and analysis software.

The Swinger software was originally designed to help golfers with their swing but it has grown to have multi-disciplinary uses across all sporting domains.
In this software, a video camera is hooked up to a laptop via firewire (1394)cable.
Video is then captured 'live' and stored either in the laptops hard-disk or RAM. Users are subsequently able to compare the capture footage via image overlay, image sync, etc.

Here we see the boys use the Deja-Vu feature where the boys are able to set the software to capture footage for a specified period and play it back after a short delay. This allows the performer to complete his action in front of the camera and then move over to the laptop to see an 'instant replay' of the previous 30secs of the clip.

GCE PE Feedback Role-play for CA

Today, Sec 3B had a their first component of CA- a Role-play giving examples of Good and Bad Feedback.
Here was the assigned task:
In groups, of 5-6
Role-play the demonstration and teaching of one skill by a coach to his students
i.e. in soccer (heading, passing) or hockey (dribbling, juggling)

In your role play, present 2 scenarios:
1-Effective use of feedback in coaching
2-Ineffective/poor use of feedback in coaching
You will need to identify clear coaching points for the skill.
You will need to make sure all members in the group have a role to play

Began by getting the boys to set-up and prepare in the Flexsi Amphitheatre on the
4th Floor:

First group up was Naren's group (together with Marcus, Eugene, Irsyad, Muhyiddin and Shaun). They began by showing us examples of good feedback:

Then came examples of how poor feedback affects performance:

(Must commend Marcus for his flamboyant volleys as well as Naren for his polished delivery)

Next up was Amsyar together with Ryson, Jordan, Izzat and Dilip

(Don't you all think Jordan look like kindergarten kid with his new hair style?)

Our next group of Fadhil, Danial, Haaziq, Haseef and Hidayat used Hockey to showcase the use of feedback

Fadzly, Clement, Aldrin, Desmond and Chong Chieh also used Hockey to demonstrate their role-play.

We had Hong Kwang, JJ, Ernest, Alym and Jaren show us the use of feedback in Goal Keeping

The creme of the crop came from Group 6's performance by Wei Yang, Jeremy, Daren Tang, Khairul and Daniel.
They too showed the use of feedback in both positive and negative scenarios and were able to capture both the use of effective teaching points and the consequences of the use of negative feedback.

Well done boys, look out for your on-line PE CA in 2 weeks time!

Joint Mobility and Flow Movement

On Thu Morning, students of 3B were given a session in Joint Mobility and Flow Movement by Mr Lloyd de Jongh.

Lloyd was part of a team of 3 presenters here in Singapore to talk to our students on safety and awareness. Having worked as a bodyguard before, Lloyd shared with the boy's how to achieve a full-body workout in just 15min, integrating all the various muscles groups in the body through their full range of motion.

As we can see from this photo, the student that enjoyed it the most was Mr Dilip Thapa:
The extreme range of motion through which Dilip can move his gluteus maximus is simply astounding. He must have taken some belly dancing classes back in Nepal!

If we see his funky leg work, we can definitely see Dilip as a contender for the next season of "So You Think You Can Dance?"

GCE PE- Weight Training for Fitness (Week4)

We are now into Week 4 of Term 1
The boys are now engaged in their Weight Training.
Today we see them beginning to work on the breakdown of performance, starting from:
1) Starting Position
2) Action
3) Finishing Position

In this session, the boys are working in groups to give their partners feedback. First group, we see Marcus filling in the assignment worksheet while Hong Kuang films and gives feedback to Ernest Ong:

In this next clip, Izzat is given Eugene feedback on the Chest press:

To assist our boys, we have capitalised on the prevalence of mobile phone technology and used their video phones to help them capture footage of each other during the performance of weight training. This will help them in reviewing each other performance.

GCE PE- Weight Training for Fitness (Week 2)

The GCE PE subject for Upper Sec boys comprises both an Academic component as well as a Coursework Component.

For the Coursework, the boys will be doing the compulsory module of Weight Training for Fitness in this Semester.

Here we see them in their first session in the gym. Coached by Mr Tan Chong Kiat, our PE teacher, Daniel Lightfoot is giving some feedback on his partner's performance of the bench-press.

In this module, students will not only need to be able to execute the correct movements and techniques but also to be able to give feedback on the way their partners and buddies execute their movements as well.

Here, Mr Tan guides students in arranging themselves to spot, observe and analyse each others technique in performing the crunch.
